The pinewood derby is a classic Cub Scout program. Your Scout will take a raw block of pine, design and decorate it, then race it down a 65-foot aluminum track. Check out pinewood derby basics here!
We've had a lot of success in Pack 100 by having three separate events centered around the pinewood derby:
At the Pinewood Car Build Day, in just one morning at a local woodshop, your Scout can choose a car design (or show up one with one), have it cut out by an adult, sand it, and then give the car the first layer or two of paint.
At the Pack Pinewood Derby, all the cars in the pack will be raced against each other. Awards are given for top racers and some other unique categories.
At the District Pinewood Derby, all the packs in Ashe and Watauga county come together for one big race. Awards are given for top racers and some other unique categories. Check out the article in the Watauga Democrat about the district derby in April 2026!
Car kits will be given to each Scout at the Holiday Party in December. Siblings and parents can design and race cars as well for the cost of the kit.
