Why Cub Scouts, and what's in it for me and my child?
Cub Scouting is a fun and educational way for kids to learn new skills, make new friends, and have a blast! It's also a great opportunity for parents to get involved in their child's development and connect with other families in the community. Some of the benefits of the Cub Scouts program:
It helps your child develop confidence, character, and citizenship through a variety of activities and adventures.
It teaches your child how to be responsible, respectful, and resourceful in their daily lives.
It exposes your child to different topics and interests, such as STEM, outdoor skills, arts and crafts, sports, and more.
It fosters a sense of belonging and teamwork among children and their leaders.
It encourages your child to have fun and be creative while learning new things.

Who can join Cub Scouts?
All children in grades K-5 can join our Cubs Scouts pack. Our pack recruits from Blowing Rock Elementary, Parkway Elementary, and Two Rivers Community School, but we welcome home schoolers and children from any other school in Watauga and Ashe counties.
We are radically inclusive and welcome families from all walks of life.
Will my children be safe?
Scouting has the most comprehensive youth protection policies of any youth organization. Safety is the organization's #1 priority. If you’d like to learn more about the policies and training our pack leaders follow, please visit this Scouting America webpage.
How often and where do you meet?
Cub Scouts are grouped in same-age dens. Dens meet every week (though talk to the den leader to confirm when and where!), typically at First Presbyterian of Boone or First United Methodist of Boone. Den meetings are on Tuesdays at 6pm.
Once per month, all the dens meet together as a pack on a Tuesday night at 6pm at First Presbyterian of Boone.
We also have events throughout the year on weekends. For a complete schedule, please visit our Events page.
What is the religious component of Cub Scouts?
Reverent is one of the points of the Scout Law—however, reverence and faith is completely a matter of the family. There are adventures oriented around faith and spirituatlity, but they are completed at home, with the family.
Pack 100 is radically inclusive, and we welcome all families of any faith, creed, or orientation. We meet at a Presbyterian Church out of their generosity, but we are not religiously affiliated with this church or any other denomination or religion.
What kind of stuff do dens do?
At den meetings, pack meetings, and other outings, Scouts work on "adventures" that lead to earning their rank. Adventures are topic-based sets of activities that form the core of the Cub Scouting program. You can learn more about each den level and see all the adventures they have to work on by visiting the Den Info page.
What is a den and how is it different from a pack?
A den is a group of children who are in the same grade or age range. Dens are typically led by parents, called den leaders.
A pack is made up of all the dens and all the Scouts and is led by the Cubmaster.
For more helpful information, including descriptions of the six Cub Scout dens, check out the New Cub Scout Family Information Guide. Also, see Scouting Lingo for more clarity on words and phrases you'll hear!
Will we need to attend every den and pack meeting and event?
Not at all!!! We know that your family schedule is busy. Some of our Scouts are involved in sports and other activities and will sometimes miss meetings. You can usually catch up on any missed activities (called "Adventures") at home, which gives you a chance to have fun and learn with your child.
Can I bring my other kids to Den and Pack meetings?
Absolutely! We welcome all family members to join our meetings, especially if you don't have other childcare arrangements. Many times, the little ones will be inspired by the awesome activities of the Scouts and can't wait to join the pack when they are older.
What kind of fundraising do you do?
We have a couple ways we raise money in the pack.
In the fall, we do a popcorn sale, through the council. Individual Cub Scouts are encouraged to sell to people they know, neighbors, etc., and the pack will have a few table sales that everyone can participate in.
In the spring, we sell camp cards. These local discount cards bring money to the pack and to individual Scouts.
We have had various fundraisers selling items around town over the years. For summer of 2026, we intend to have a booth selling drinks and food at the Boonerang Festival, so please plan to help out with that!
For the Aquarium Overnight trip in December, we are planning to hold a one-day pancake sale at the Watauga Farmer’s Market to help with the cost of that adventure. More to come soon!
When we do pack fundraisers, a percentage of the funds raised or time committed by the Scout and their family will be put in an Individual Scouting Account (ISA) that can be used to pay national dues, for uniform parts, or for individual events. Specific percentages and information will be shared in the kickoff materials for each fundraiser.
This sounds like a great program! How do we sign up for Cub Scouts and get started?
To join Pack 1720, first register and submit a youth application on the my.Scouting.org website. Once we receive your request to join, a member of our pack committee will get in touch with you to provide details about attending the next den or pack meeting.
NOTE: If you would like to volunteer for a leadership role, please speak with one of our Pack Leaders before applying as an adult volunteer.

How much does it cost to join and participate?
Scouting has some required and some optional costs that we try to keep as low as possible. Here is an estimate of the costs per scout (as of 2025–26 program year):
Required Costs
Scouting America National Registration fee (annual membership, paid directly to Scouting America):
$85 Youth Registration Fee
$15 Scout Life magazine (you can opt in or out of this)
Other Costs
Pack 100 does not charge a yearly dues—we try to make our program affordable through group fundraising throughout the year. However, if your family cannot assist with group fundraisers, we ask that you contribute $50 per year per Scout to the pack to pay for their awards and program materials.
Additionally, your Scout will need a uniform. You can buy a new one through the pack, or you can borrow a uniform from our closet.
Other optional events, like campouts, are paid by the individual participating. A more detailed cost plan for 2025–26 is coming soon! Costs for campouts will range from $20 per person for pack campouts to $75 for the aquarium overnight in December.
We do our best to keep pack costs as low as possible while enabling a really fun, engaging program that takes advantage of everything the High Country offers.
NOTE: We are open to all youth who are interested in Scouting. We offer scholarships and financial aid for those who require them. Please speak with the Cubmaster, Ryan Showman (pack100boonenc@gmail.com) for more information.
