Summer 2025 Activities

Below are the summer events our pack is hosting. If your Scout attends three events this summer, they will earn the Summer Activity Adventure!

Event: Firefly Hike
• Date and time: June 6, 7pm
• Location: Tanawaha Trail at Holloway Mountain Road (link to parking spot)
• What to bring: Sturdy shoes, 6 Essentials in a backup (including/especially flashlight)

• Other information: We are lucky to have here in Watauga a population of synchronous fireflies....so let's check 'em out! We'll be exploring on a portion of the Tanawaha Trail off the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Event: Pack Hike
• Date and time: Sunday, July 6, 2pm
• Location: Otter Falls in Seven Devils (https://www.sevendevilsnc.gov/parks-and-recreation/page/otter-falls,https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/north-carolina/otter-falls-trail)
• What to bring: Sturdy shoes that can get wet; clothes that can get wet; towel; water and snacks; sun protection.

• Other information: The hike starts with a descent down to a waterfall, splash area, and lots of rocks and water pools to explore. The return trip is under a mile but a little steep at times, but there are ample benches and stopping points. Parts of the trail are closed due to Helene.

Event: Scout Night with the Boone Bigfoots
• Date and time: July 24, game starts at 6:30pm
• Location: Beaver Field at Jim and Bettie Smith Stadium at App State (top of Bodenheimer Drive Boone, NC 28607)
• What to bring: Uniform shirt or pack tshirt
• Event leader: ashepack221@gmail.com. Please RSVP at that email address.
• Other information:  Scouts and siblings cost is $1 for the game or $10 for the game and a meal. Adults are $5 (no meal option). Bring cash to pay at the gate. Scouts will be on the field for the national anthem and other on-field activities.

Event: Conservation Project & Naturalist Tour
• Date and time: Saturday, July 26, 9:30am
• Location: Valle Crucis Park
• What to bring: Clothes that can get dirty and wet; watershoes/sandals for exploring the river; towel; water and snacks; sun protection. We may need some basic gardening tools; reach out to Ryan for more information to see what is needed.

• Other information: To begin the day, we’ll be doing a conservation project for the park: installing nature information signs and planting some native pollinator plants. After the project, the park naturalist will take us on a tour of camp as we look for local wildlife. This may include wading around in the river, so be prepared! 

Event: District Shooting Sports Day
• Date and time: Saturday, August 2, 10am
• Location: TBD (TBD)
• What to bring: Sun protection, water, snacks

Additional Event: Pack 221 Summer Cub Fun Day
• Date and time: July 19, time TBD
• Location: New River State Park, Wagoner Access Picnic Shelter  (1018-1478 Wagoner Access Rd, Jefferson, NC 28640)
• What to bring: Water, snacks, sun protection, clothes that can get wet, towel, sturdy shoes for the hike.

• Other information:  Our friends in Pack 221 in West Jefferson are hosting a Raingutter Pool-Noodle Regatta, followed by a hike, and they’ve invited our pack to join. Email the above address if you're interested.
